Video: Construction progress on Abu Dhabi Airport

A video has been released revealing the progress of construction of the Midfield Terminal building at Abu Dhabi Airport.

Abu Dhabi International Airport is one of the world’s fastest growing airport hubs, servicing over 96 destinations in 54 countries.

In order to meet increasing demand over the coming years, Abu Dhabi Airports began construction on the Midfield Terminal Complex in 2013 as part of the $6.8Bn redevelopment of the Airport.

Around 30 million passengers are expected to use Abu Dhabi Airport per year, handling up to 8,500 passengers per hour.

Designed by Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates, the Midfield Terminal Building will cost $3.2Bn and gains its name from its location between the two runways at Abu Dhabi International Airport.

It will be the biggest building in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and can be seen from over 1.5km away.

The central terminal space has enough room to fit 21 football pitches and also has 65 aircraft gates.

The X-shaped new terminal will allow a short journey from runway to parking stand, resulting in a quicker and smoother passenger experience.

156 check-in counters and 48 self-service kiosks plus a 27km long baggage handling system capable of processing over 19,000 bags per hour will help the Airport to meet its target of a minimum connection time of 45 minutes including baggage transfer.

Passengers will be able to enjoy the 28,000 square metres of retail and food and beverage space and relax on the 30,000 square metres of airline lounges.

Moving quickly around the complex won’t be a problem thanks to the 145 lifts and 46 travelators.

The roof span of the complex at its widest point is 319m, nearly twice that of Heathrow Terminal 5 (160m). It also contains one of the world’s largest arches, spanning 180m across.

With security being of paramount importance at airports all around the world, 4,300 CCTV cameras will be employed to enhance airport security.

There will be space for 3,400 cars in short term parking and 1,500 in long term parking.

The project will see 69,000 tonnes of structural steel; 600,000 cubic metres of concrete; 115,000 square metres of external glazing; 325,000 square metres of stone flooring and 7,425 foundation piles used on the project.

The Midfield Terminal Building is being designed with sustainability in mind, with at least 75% of construction waste being diverted from landfill as construction progresses.

The Complex’s sophisticated energy and water monitoring systems, coupled with the sustainable materials and construction process, saw the Abu Dhabi Urban Planning Council award the Midfield Terminal Building with a three pearl design rating from the Estidama Pearl Building Rating System.

It is the largest individual building to be rated globally by the Estidama programme and is now the highest rated airport terminal in the Gulf Cooperation Council.

The Midfield Terminal Building is due for completion in the fourth quarter of 2017.
