Positive Final Investment Decision for world’s largest offshore windfarm
Dong Energy has confirmed a positive Final Investment Decision for Hornsea One offshore windfarm off the coast of Grimsby in Northern England, this morning.
Construction of the world’s largest offshore windfarm will commence asap and is expected to be fully operational in 2020. When operational, Hornsea Project One will have a capacity of up to 1.2GW, producing enough clean green electricity to power well over 800,000 UK homes per year.
The wind turbines will be placed within an area of approximately 407sq km, located 120km off the Yorkshire coast.

To complement the construction, Siemens will also build a new blade factory in Hull, boosting a Northern and UK wide supply chain.
A recent independent report – Impact of DONG Energy Investment in the Humber Area – showed that DONG Energy intends to invest £6Bn in projects in the Humber region over the period of 2013 – 2019.
Hornsea One is Energy Secretary Amber Rudd said: “Thanks to Government support the UK is the world leader in offshore wind energy and this success story is going from strength to strength. Dong Energy’s investment shows that we are open for business and is a vote of confidence in the UK and in our plan to tackle the legacy of under-investment and build an energy infrastructure fit for the 21st century.
“This project means secure, clean energy for the country, jobs and financial security for working people and their families, and more skills and growth boosting the Northern Powerhouse.
In December, Balfour Beatty was awarded the £25M contract for the construction of the onshore substation for the windfarm, located at North Killingholme in North Lincolnshire.
DONG Energy took over full ownership of Hornsea Project One in February 2015 following years of development alongside SMart Wind and will develop the project through into construction and operation.
