UK Driverless car projects gearing up

The government has announced £20M of funding for eight projects to help develop the next generation of driverless technology.

Visiting Nuneaton, Business Secretary Sajid Javid announced the eight projects will use the funding to research and develop enhanced communication between vehicles and roadside information systems or infrastructure such as road signs and traffic signalling equipment.

The £20M funding for the projects will come from the government’s £100M Intelligent Mobility Fund.

Amongst the eight projects will be the UK Connected Intelligent Transport System Environment (UKCITE),will equip 40 miles of roads in Coventry with different talking car technologies to examine how they  can be used to improve journeys, reduce congestion, whilst also providing entertainment and safety services through greater connectivity.

Business Secretary Sajid Javid said: “Our cars of the future will be equipped with the technologies that will make getting from A to B safer, faster, and cleaner. They will alert drivers of accidents ahead and be able to receive information from their surroundings about hazards, increasing the safety of drivers, passengers and pedestrians.

“Britain is a world-leader in research and development in such innovative technologies which improve lives and create opportunity for all. That is why this government has protected the £6 billion science budget and is providing up to £20 million for these projects.”

The rest of the projects include:

Insight will develop and trial driverless shuttles to improve urban accessibility for the disabled and visually impaired.

Tools for Autonomous Logistics Operations and Management is a collaboration between transport modellers and the computer games industry to develop new modelling.

FLOURISH will help develop new tools to improve the understanding of autonomous vehicle users needs.

MOVE-UK will be accelerate the development, market readiness and deployment of automated driving systems

Innovative Testing of Autonomous Control Techniques (INTACT) will seek to reduce the cost of testing and evaluating autonomous control.

Pathway to Autonomous Commercial Vehicles will develop solutions to monitor key information from the vehicle and predict safety risks based on analytics.

i-MOTORS – Intelligent Mobility for Future Cities Transport Systems will create a connected Vehicle to Anything (V2X) system through a mobile platform and develop hardware which will receive and analyse data in real-time from multiple locations via online cloud technology.
