Reaction to latest ONS construction industry output figures

The Vinden Partnership says return to growth is “welcome news”.

The Office of National Statistics (ONS) has released its latest figures revealing that construction industry output increased slightly in October, rising by 0.2%.

This was slightly lower than the expected increase of one per cent.

The ONS figures show that new work increased by 1.2%, with private commercial work rising by 4.1% and private new housing up 2.3%.

There were drops in public new housing, private industrial, other new public work and infrastructure.

When compared with October last year, construction industry output increased by one per cent. New work rose by 4.2%, with repair and maintenance decreasing by 4.2%.

Martin Bennett, a Regional Director of The Vinden Partnership  – a leading multi-disciplinary consultant company to the built environment – was encouraged by the return to growth.

Mr Bennett said: “The return to growth for the construction industry, all be it at a slightly lower than expected, is welcome news.

“I would hope that 2016 would see a return to a more robust growth rate. The shortfall in new public house building will also need to be addressed if the Chancellor’s ambitious house building plans announced in his Autumn Statement are to be fulfilled.”
