Taxi advertising signs to tackle congestion in London

Taxi-top digital advertising boards to display road traffic information to help drivers avoid congestion.

Transport for London (TfL) have today started a six month trial of the technology BrightMove Media, to enable London’s taxis to be able to display traffic information, in a bid to reduce congestion and help road users avoid congested roads.

The messages will be displayed on around 200 taxis fitted with electronic boards using GPS technology, to ensure that the information is correct and up to date. The taxis cover 40 to 50 areas that are known to have traffic delays.

In the future, the technology could be used to provide real-time updates on any incidents across London’s road network.

Jamie Lindsay, BrightMove Media’s Chief Executive, said: “Broadcasting congestion information to Londoners on iconic black taxis highlights the unique technological and programming capabilities our software possesses. This trial will keep Londoners up to date with live traffic conditions and events in the Capital – exactly the kind of information that they need. We are delighted to be partnering with TfL in delivering this scheme.”

Garrett Emmerson, TfL’s Chief Operating Officer for Surface Transport, said: “Using the Capital’s fleet of taxis to get real-time traffic information out will inform other drivers of any disruption on the network, helping them to avoid the most congested routes.”

The trial is part of a range on initiatives TfL is undertaking in a bid to tackle congestion problems in the Capital and keep traffic moving.

Last week, it was announced that a new team of officers would be working in partnership with the police, problem solving issues such as inconsiderate driving and parking as a cause of congestion.

SCOOT technology is also continuing its expansion, proving to reduce delays by 12%.
