€257M contract for cancer treatment centre awarded to Bouygues UK

Bouygues UK has been awarded the contract to design and build a new state-of-the-art hospital for University College London Hospitals (UCLH).

The new facility will be dedicated to advanced cancer treatment and surgery services in central London and is one of the first of its kind in the country. Designed by Architect Scott Tallon Walker in associated with Edward Williams Architects, it will form part of a new national high energy proton beam therapy.

Construction comprises five floors offering care and treatment for blood cancer as well as a short stay facility, plus an underground level where the proton beam therapy will be located. This will involve the excavation of 25m as well as the installation of the latest proton beam therapy equipment – weighing and 120 tonnes per gantry.

Works have already begun with the centre expected to be fully open by 2019. The project will achieve the “BIM Exemplar” label, attesting to its exemplary use of BIM (Building Information Modelling). It will also be targeting BREEAM® certification with “Excellent” status.

Chief Executive of UCLH, Sir Robert Naylor, said: “I am delighted that the contract to build this major new NHS facility has now been awarded. It will make a significant difference to the lives of hundreds of NHS patients every year and help us to advance our research into precision medicine.”

UCLH is a provider of acute and specialist healthcare services for people from all across the UK and overseas. The new building, developed with funding from UCLH and the British Department of Health, will be built in close proximity to UCLH’s Cancer Centre and radiotherapy services, creating a leading hub for cancer treatment in central London.
