Rise in commercial vehicles’ registration in September

Registrations of commercial vehicles grew strongly in September according to the latest figures released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

The demand for commercial vehicles in the UK saw registrations in September increase by 1% to 65,453 units.

Boosted by the new 65-plate, overall commercial vehicles’ registrations were up by a fifth in the month, led by a 24.8% increase in trucks, while van demand grew 19.6%.

So far in 2015, 321,302 commercial vehicles have been registered, an increase of 2%.

Mike Hawes, Chief Executive, SMMT, said, “The continued recovery of the commercial vehicle market is good to see. Particularly encouraging is the consistent growth seen this year in the traditionally more volatile truck sector, while the van market – buoyed by robust business confidence and the ongoing trend towards online deliveries – shows no sign of slowing.”

With some 160,000 people employed directly in manufacturing and in excess of 799,000 across the wider automotive industry, it accounts for 11.8% of total UK export of goods and invests £2.4Bn each year in automotive research & development.
