New £17M Leeds College of Building campus opens

Leeds College of Building has welcomed its first students into its recently opened state-of the-art £17M education and training campus.

Work was recently completed on the new BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rated facility located on Hunslet Lane in Leeds City Centre on land purchased from Yorkshire Design Group in 2013. The new 8,000sq m building will provide facilities for a significant number of Leeds College of Building’s 7,500 students and help to deliver the College’s mission statement of ‘Inspiring lives and building futures’.

As the only specialist further and higher education construction college in the UK, Leeds College of Building delivers a comprehensive range of courses related to construction and the built environment, including apprenticeships, further and higher education and business training.

Principal at Leeds College of Building, Ian Billyard, says: “Everyone associated with Leeds College of Building is delighted to see our new campus complete and open to students.

“As the UK’s only specialist construction college, this new building has been specifically designed to provide a modern learning environment, where both our students and staff can thrive. It will enable us to continue building on the high standard of training that we are renowned for, as well as expanding the number of courses and qualifications we offer, in order for us to stay ahead of the UK’s rapidly evolving construction industry.

“This new campus will shape the lives of thousands of young people, as well as helping to further the careers of large numbers of existing construction workers, over the coming years. It has also created a landmark building in the South Bank area of Leeds, which is currently benefiting from a huge amount of regeneration and investment so it’s great to be part of this.”

An open day was held in May that provided visitors with an opportunity to get information on the courses provided, speak to lecturers and participate in mini taster sessions in brickwork, electrical, plumbing and surveying.

The building is now fully open and able to help Leeds College of Building cement its students’ futures in the UK construction industry.
