Intel given go ahead for Leixlip plant expansion plans

Intel Ireland has been given the green light for its expansion plans at its plant in Leixlip, Co Kildare.

The decision means the company will now be able to bid for an estimated €4Bn new chip manufacturing plant.

The technology giant was given planning permission by Kildare County Council for the two-storey development which will see an additional 90,000sq m of floor space to the existing campus.

Road infrastructure will also be improved, with the R148 widened along with changes to the internal road network.

The plant is currently one of the biggest manufacturing facilities in Ireland, employing 4,500 people.

Welcoming the news of the successful planning application, County Kildare Chamber CEO, Allan Shine, said the expansion would provide further employment opportunities for the area.

He commented: “This planning permission now ensures that Intel Ireland can bid for the tender which if successful will create 3,000 construction jobs and in excess of 850 full time jobs once developed”.
