A new Wastewater Treatment Plant has opened in Kinvara, Co. Galway following an investment of €5.1M by Irish Water.
The Minister for Housing, Planning, Community and Local Government, Simon Coveney, was on hand top on the facility after construction was completed.
In addition to the creation of the wastewater treatment, upgrades were carried out to the Kinvara wastewater collection network.
The plant will also see visitors to Kinvara Bay being able to enjoy improved bathing water.
Kinvara was one of 44 locations in Ireland where untreated wastewater was discharged directly into the sea, as prior to the plant, there were no wastewater treatment facilities for the town.
Minister Coveney described the construction of the plant as “significant” for local people and businesses.
He said: The works carried out by Irish Water will now provide the flexibility to deal with population growth in the area, allow for increasing tourist numbers and provide capacity for industrial and commercial development as well as ensuring that the treatment of wastewater meets all EU and Irish regulations.”
Seamus Granahan, Irish Water’s Regional Asset Operations Manager said: “As there wasn’t any previous level of treatment in Kinvara, a new wastewater treatment plant was essential for the sustainable development of Kinvara Town and its environs.
“The construction of the new wastewater treatment plant being opened today is part of Irish Water’s project to eliminate all untreated wastewater discharges going forward.”
