Dualling scheme on A26 Glarryford to A44 Drones Road is making good progress

The Northern Ireland Executive’s £55M dualling scheme is making good progress, with a significant amount of work already completed.

The new dual carriageway which is 8km long, consists of seven kilometres of new dual two lane rural all-purpose carriageway, with a national speed limit of 70mph.

The new roundabout at the A44 Drones Road junction, as well as a number of flyover junctions along the route, will provide access to the new and local road network.

Transport Minister, Michelle Mcllveen, visited the scheme to view the works and is “really impressed” by the scale of the project and how it has been managed.

Mrs Mcllveen said: “The project represents a significant £55million investment by the Northern Ireland Executive in the roads infrastructure in the area and provides a welcome boost for the local construction industry. Once completed this scheme will help improve road safety, reduce congestion and improve journey times for the 18,000 vehicles which travel it every day for tourism and work”.

Transport Minister,Danny Kennedy, said: “These works, which will take twenty eight months to complete, are of significant importance to the economic development of Northern Ireland.

“Upgrading this stretch of the A26 to dual carriageway will help grow the local economy and contribute to the wider economic development in Northern Ireland, both in the short term and in the long term.”

Around one million tonnes of earth has been moved along with the demolition of the Crankhill bridge and the realignment of a section of the River Clough.  Three culverts have also been installed and work is currently progressing on the construction of three new bridges along the scheme.

It is on schedule for being completed by 2017.
