Kier has been awarded the contract to design and construct a 22-storey building that will be the tallest building in Plymouth.
Standing at 78m high, the student accommodation building will provide 507 beds across 164,935sq ft.
The building is owned by Threesixty Developments Limited, formerly known as Knightsbridge Student Housing Limited, and be managed by The Student Housing Company.
Located at in the centre of the city, Beckley Court on Cobourg Street will consist of individual studio apartments and cluster flats. All flats will be finished to a high standard and contain deluxe shower rooms and contemporary fitted kitchens.
The building will be fitted with a security system that will only allow entrance via an electronic key and be monitored by CCTV.
Commercial space will be provided on the lower ground and ground floors, along with a management suite, reception area, common rooms and laundrette facilities.
Demolition work is currently taking place with Kier set to begin construction by the end of the month.
Bob Crompton, Chef Executive of Threesixty Developments Limited, said: “We’re very happy to be working with Kier on this project; the new building will be an important development for Plymouth as it’s a key landmark site for those that enter the city.
“The city planners were especially keen to have a building of architectural quality in that location and we worked very hard with them to design something that would be fitting. We’re really quite proud of it and hope the people of Plymouth will be too.”
Kier Construction Managing Director for the south-west and Wales, Anthony Irving, said: “This landmark project, which will be one of the tallest buildings in the south-west, is a significant win for our Devon and Cornwall team, and forms a key part of Vision 2020, Kier’s strategy or growth.
“The delivery of this major flagship project will require around 200 people working on site at its peak, which means it’s also an important scheme for Plymouth and the city’s economy, creating valuable employment and training opportunities in our local supply chain.”
The building is due to be ready for the new the intake of students in September 2016.
