Construction activity in the UK declined in February according to the latest figures from the Office of National Statistics.
Construction output fell by 1.7% in February in comparison with the figures from the previous month.
The ONS said the decrease was largely driven by a drop off in all new work, which fell by 3.3% – most notably in infrastructure.
In a reversal of January’s strong performance, infrastructure activity decreased sharply by 7.3%. This was the sub-sector’s first decrease since October last year.
There was also bad news for the housebuilding sector, with output falling by 2.6% on January’s figures.
There was good performance from the repair and maintenance sector with an increase of 1.2% on January’s activity.
On a more positive note for the industry, construction output did increase by 1.5% on a three-month on three-month basis – the fourth consecutive period of growth for time period comparison.
Kate Davies, ONS senior statistician, said: “There were small falls across a range of construction sub sectors for the second month running, following a record performance for the industry at the end of 2016.”
