Stansted Airport unveils plans for £130M arrivals building

London Stansted Airport has announced plans to build a new £130M arrivals terminal to cope with growing passenger numbers.

The building marks the latest phase in the multi-million pound transformation programme by airport owners, Manchester Airports Group (MAG), to support growth and attract new passengers and airlines.

Stansted is the busiest single terminal airport in the UK, handling around 5,000 departing passengers every hour during peak periods. Currently, 24 million people a year use the airport but the new plans we see capacity expand to cope with a footfall of 43 million.

MAG said they expected passenger numbers to increase due to runway constraints at other airports in the capital.

The proposed 34,000m2 building will span three levels and be built next to the current terminal and hotel.

The new terminal will see larger immigration and baggage reclaim areas, plus the creation of new retail facilities and public forecourt.

Under the new plans, the existing terminal building will be reconfigured to deal exclusively with departures in a move to speed up check-in and security within the international departures lounge.

Stansted Airport’s CEO, Andrew Cowan, said: “It has always been our vision to invest in its infrastructure to create the best experience for our growing number of passengers and airline customers and have already invested over £150 million to update our terminal and satellite facilities, created 1,000 more jobs, added over 40 new destinations and increased passenger numbers by nearly seven million.

“Stansted is thriving as a national asset, forming a key component of the UK’s aviation infrastructure at a time when airport capacity in the country is at a premium. Our investment will boost competition and enable the airport to play a bigger role in supporting economic growth, jobs and international connectivity across the East of England and London.”

Once planning approval has been successful MAG will turn their attention to awarding contracts to interested companies to take on the work.

The construction of the terminal is expected to begin in 2018 to take three years to complete.
