The Education Secretary Justine Greening has announced the government is to provide £2.4Bn for schools in England to create extra places and undertake repairs.
The cash will see 600,000 more school places created by 2021 to keep pace with an increasing school-age population and also expand existing grammar schools.
Out of the £2.4Bn fund, £980m will go towards the extra school places and expansion, with £1.4Bn to be spent on improving the condition of schools.
Around 1500 school building projects will receive cash to undertake the regeneration of their facilities.
Education Secretary Justine Greening said: “Our Plan for Britain is to build a fairer society, with a good school place available for every child.
“This £2.4Bn investment, together with our proposals to create more good school places, will help ensure every young person has the opportunity to fulfil their potential.”
The funding was originally announced as part of the 23.2Bn school capital funding by the former chancellor George Osborne in the 2015 spending review.
The announcement follows the warning from the National Audit Office (NAO) that it will cost £6.7Bn to bring all existing school sites up to “satisfactory” condition.
The NAO said the deterioration in the condition of the school estate represented a “significant risk to long-term value for money.”
