A £490M fund will be made available to councils across England to bid on to improve their road systems.
Councils can bid for a share of the funding for schemes that will target cutting congestion and upgrades to local roads to improve journey times.
The investment will cover schemes from 2018 to 2020 and come from the National Productivity Investment Fund, which is providing £1.3Bn to enhance transport links to support economic growth.
Those bids that will tackle congestion through the use of technology are being actively encouraged.
Transport Minister Andrew Jones said: “We are investing record amounts on our roads – spending more than £23Bn on providing better journeys for motorists.
“We are also committing a further £1.3Bn up to 2020 to cut congestion and provide important upgrades to ensure our roads are fit for the future.
“This money will allow councils to go even further to improve their roads and will be targeted at areas, which need it most, providing a significant boost to the UK’s economy.”
The government is already investing significant sums across the country on improvements to the road network including schemes in Blackpool, Chester and also Bridgwater in support of Hinkley Point C nuclear power station.
Councils will be given details of how to bid, with the competition will running until the end of June.
