Liverpool council set to appoint design team for new cruise terminal

Liverpool’s new cruise terminal has taken a move closer as Liverpool City Council is set to appoint a design team to plan for the new city landmark situated at Princes Parade.

The council’s cabinet will be asked to give their backing later this week to the choice of a design and technical team to develop the project.

Earlier this year, the council undertook a fact-finding mission in Europe to see how a modern and larger terminal could replace the current facility at the Pier Head.

Once the design team has been approved, the council will submit an outline business case for a £20m contribution from the Liverpool Combined Authority’s Strategic Investment Fund by Monday, 29 May.

Subject to successfully passing this stage, the project will then move on to a full business case.

Liverpool hope to take full advantage of the current boom in cruise industry by creating a new passenger and baggage terminal along with with passport control, lounge, café, toilets, taxi rank and vehicle pick up point.

The plans also include the possibility of a new 200-room hotel and 1,100 multi-storey car park.

In 2016, over 60 vessels with 120,000 passengers and crew visited the city, with the industry worth more than £7M a year to Liverpool’s economy.

Mayor of Liverpool Joe Anderson said: “Appointing a technical team is a vital step in exploring how we achieve that move and if we can, we do it to the highest standards.

“A new cruise facility would also be a huge boost to our plans to transform the North Liverpool docklands and the support we’ve already received from the industry to the idea is hugely encouraging.”
