£13M London Luton Airport contract awarded

Northern Ireland-based Company, Whitemountain, has been appointed by London Luton Airport (LLA) to help deliver the first major work as part of the Airport’s £100M redevelopment project.

London Luton Airport is one of the UK’s largest airports and last year carried 10.5 million passengers. The Airport indirectly employs over 8,600 staff and is a key economic driver for the region.

The £13m contract will see Whitemountain undertake the construction and civil engineering of the landside infrastructure and transport facilities, including converting the existing approach road to the terminal building into a dual carriageway, remodelling of the set-down area and the relocation of the coach terminal.

Mark Kelly, Managing Director of Whitemountain said: “There is a big ambition to transform London Luton Airport and we’re very happy to be delivering works on landside infrastructure and transport facilities. The work we are delivering will be designed to improve access, circulation and parking facilities. This is necessary to support the Terminal Expansion Project and is at the centre of a wider strategy to improve passenger and airside facilities.

“These types of civil engineering contacts are significant for the company in its growth across the UK and further afield. With extensive experience in road construction and the airport sector, our expertise and ability to deliver quality projects on time positions us very well within the marketplace.”

The £100M investment in London Luton Airport will transform the Airport by improving the overall customer experience and increase capacity by 6 million from 12 million to 18 million passengers per year by 2026. A new security search area is already in operation and is equipped with the latest scanning and tray return systems designed to improve the speed and ease for passengers to clear security.

Nick Barton, CEO of London Luton Airport, commented: “The appointment of Whitemountain shows we’re making good progress on the redevelopment of LLA. The work to widen the link road, remodel our bus terminal and increase car parking space is essential to our vision to transform the airport. Alongside major improvements to the terminal, the work will not only increase LLA’s capacity by 50% to 18 million passengers per year by 2026, but also ensure that we deliver the best possible experience for our passengers.”
