BAM Construction has been selected by the University of Lincoln to construct its new £16M Isaac Newton Building following a competitive tender process.
The major new facility will be located on the University’s Brayford Pool Campus, where BAM will create a four-storey extension to the Engineering Hub. The new building is named in honour of one of the world’s greatest scientists.
Covering some 7,500sq m, the new facility will house a range of state-of-the-art facilities for teaching and research. Also included will be numerous specialist and general teaching spaces, a 500-seat lecture theatre and social spaces including an atrium and canteen.
Some of the rooms will provide specialist facilities that include being lined with conductive fabric to create a Faraday cage, along with a sound deadening semi-anechoic chamber.
By relocating the University’s Schools of Engineering; Computer Science; and Mathematics & Physics into one space, the student experience will be enhanced with the provision of a modern learning environment.
This is not BAM’s first project at the campus. The contractor completed the original Engineering Hub, an award-winning collaboration between the University and Siemens plc, four years ago.
Jason Pink, BAM’s Construction Manager, said: “We are very much looking forward to returning to the University of Lincoln to add to the facility we created.
“We will work hard as always to ensure we do our best for the local community and environment as well as creating a first class building for students and staff.”
BAM will involve engineering students to help them use the building process as a learning experience as part of their studies.
