The Energy Related Product (ErP) Directive will come into force on 26th September and will apply to all domestic, commercial and industrial heating and hot water products sold throughout Europe.
ErP is a new European Union regulation that is designed to improve the efficiency of heating and hot water products and will make consumers aware of the energy efficiency level by means of a simple to understand energy label.
The directive’s introduction aims to reduce carbon emissions of white goods and is part of the EU’s commitment to reducing energy use by 20% and increase the share of renewable energies by 20% by 2020.
Products purchased before 26th September will still be able to be installed but following this date, boiler manufacturers and installers will have to ensure that their products and systems meet the minimum requirements within the Energy Related Products directive.
ErP specifies the minimum performance criteria that manufacturers must meet for boilers, water heaters and other heating appliances up to 400 kW.
All space and combi space heaters less than or equal to 70kW will require an energy label. This will also apply to water heaters and hot water storage tanks with a capacity of 2000 litres. Water heaters and hot water storage tanks with a capacity of up to 500 litres will also need an energy label.
Labels will show efficiency bands for water heating products ranging from A-G and eventually extend to A+++. Low-rated water heating products will not be permitted under the new directive.
Boiler manufacturers will be responsible for ensuring their products have compliant energy labelling, while installers will be responsible for calculating the efficiency of the installed system, providing an energy label for the product and completing the fiche documentation.
It is therefore vital that those affected in the industry are familiar with ErP and ensure their work complies with the new directive when it comes into force later this month.
