Housebuilding drives strong start to 2017 for construction industry

Private housebuilding played a key role in a rise in construction activity in the three months to April according to the latest Glenigan Index for April.

There was more positive news for the construction industry as the Glenigan Price Index for April revealed a rise of 6% in project starts.

The increase was due to a revival in civil engineering projects, alongside growth in industrial and health project starts.  Civil engineering starts were 26% up on the three months November 2016 to January 2017 but down 7% on the same period last year.

The biggest driver of growth, however, was the strong performance of private residential projects.

Private residential starts for the three months to April were 36% higher than the same period last year and also a third higher than the three months to January 2017.

There was a slowdown in the non-residential sector including offices, education, and community & amenity projects as the three months to April were down 7% on 2016’s figures and 10% less the previous three-month picture.

Industrial projects were up an impressive 35%, which the survey suggests is a result on projects pressing ahead following delays caused by the Brexit vote.

Examining the construction industry’s performance at a regional level, the North East (24%), North West (28%), South West (34%) and West Midlands (25%) all produced double-digit growth, while the South East, Scotland and Yorkshire & the Humber all saw softer levels of growth.
