As part of its 50th Anniversary celebrations, the University of Dundee is inviting people to design and build a new iconic university building in a virtual version of Dundee.
Using Minecraft, the competition will be of interest to those with ambitions of becoming architects and designers.
Minecraft has been seen by many within the construction industry as an entry-level version of Building Information Modelling (BIM) and an excellent way to encourage younger people to think about pursuing a career in the built environment.
The skill shortage in the construction industry is a hot topic with concerns over how to replace ageing workers and the potential loss of migrant workers stemming from Brexit.
The competition will see teams competing in a 50-hour long ‘design jam’ and will be open to those 18 years and over.
4J Studios, who have built Edinburgh Castle, the Forth Rail Bridge and the V&A Museum of Design, Dundee in the virtual world, will be on hand to provide support.
For those under 18 or people visiting, two consoles will be available to get involved and try out their virtual design and build skills.
Professor Sir Pete Downes, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University, said, “To celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the University, we are looking for you to come and to design and build a completely new building on campus.
“We are delighted to welcome anyone interested in joining our alumni as we celebrate the last 50 years of transforming lives and we look forward to seeing what the next 50 years could look like.”
Registered teams must be willing to participate from 12 noon on Friday, 19th May until 2 pm on Sunday, 21st May.
