New trains will soon be running on the Great Eastern Main Line following Network Rail’s completion of the rail upgrades in preparation for the Elizabeth line between Liverpool Street and Shenfield.
The railway at Sheffield has seen expanded its capacity to cope with the with the increased frequency once the Elizabeth line extends from Essex and through the central tunnels in 2019.
A new dedicated platform (Platform 6) has been built for the new service, with Platform 5 being extended and three new sidings at Shenfield ready for the new trains.
A significant overhaul of the entire rail junction at Shenfield, including track, signals and overhead power lines has been completed to allow services to freely pass through the junction uninterrupted, therefore cutting delays and improving passenger journeys.
The improvements have seen more than 5,000 metres of new track and 26 new track switches installed as part of the junction remodelling works.
Work was also carried out at stations between Liverpool Street and Shenfield to prepare for the new trains, with additional work continuing along the route including TfL installing new lifts at Maryland, Manor Park and Seven Kings.
Howard Smith, TfL’s Operations Director of TfL Rail, said: “The new platform and other works at Shenfield station will benefit both regular commuters and those travelling further afield. This marks another milestone in the delivery of the new railway.
“Our customers using TfL Rail will be the first to use our new trains, which will travel between Shenfield and Liverpool Street in preparation for Elizabeth line services in December 2018.”
